Peak trade in strawberries from Moscow region producers will be this week
In the first week of July in the Moscow region, a peak in sales of strawberries from producers near Moscow is expected; such strawberries are considered the most environmentally friendly, RIAMO reports citing a message from the press service of the regional Ministry of Consumer Market and Services.
Traditionally, in early June, strawberries grown in Serbia, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, and Morocco are the first to appear on the regional market. Then, starting from the 2-3 weeks of June, Russian berries are supplied to the Moscow region market - from the Stavropol and Krasnodar Territories.
“This week we expect a peak in strawberry trade from agricultural producers and farmers near Moscow. Traditionally, the highest price for berries was at the start of the first harvests. As volumes increase, the retail price decreases,” said Vladimir Posazhennikov, Minister of Consumer Market and Services of the Moscow Region.
Strawberries grown near Moscow have a high production cost due to local climatic and natural conditions. Moreover, it is the berries grown in the region that are considered the most environmentally friendly. Strawberries from the Moscow region have a short shelf life; their transportation is possible only in special refrigerators equipped with refrigeration chambers, and their sales period should not exceed 2-3 hours from the moment of delivery “to the point.” Unlike imported berries, they do not undergo special treatment to increase their shelf life many times over.
“If we talk about retail trade, in chain stores, as well as non-stationary retail outlets, prices for strawberries at the beginning of the current week vary (depending on the category and trade policy of the retail store and the NTO facility) - on average from 150 rubles and up to 500 rubles per kilogram. According to our monitoring, the first batches of strawberries from agricultural producers near Moscow were sold at approximately 350 rubles per kilogram,” Posazhennikov added.
The minimum sales volume at one chain retail outlet is 500 kilograms of strawberries per month. In the most popular places, during peak demand, one store manages to sell more than 1.5 tons of strawberries within a month. If we talk about retail chains, then, depending on the number of stores, one retailer manages to sell from 5-6 tons to 150 tons during the month of peak demand for strawberries.
“Unfortunately, retail chains do not sell strawberries from the Moscow region. The main reasons are the lack of a warehousing system, cargo redistribution and logistics, as well as inconsistency of packaging with the requirements of retail chains. Therefore, chains prefer to bring strawberries from abroad, and this means a completely different price and freshness of the berries,” Posazhennikov clarified.
Today in the Moscow region there are at least 12 agricultural producers specializing in growing strawberries. These are both large state farms, such as the Leninsky State Farm and the Nepetsino Agro-Industrial Complex, and small private producers.
