About company

The prototype of the Twitter microblogging service was created by a young programmer Jack Dorsey in the spring of 2006. Initially, it was a regular utility for exchanging messages between employees of the Odeo company, where Dorsey worked. And already in the summer a beta version of Twitter was released.

Subsequently, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone acquired Odeo's assets. In April 2007, Twitter became a separate enterprise, and by the end of the year the whole world was talking about it. Evan Williams becomes the company's CEO. The company became more and more popular due to the registration of world stars. Their publication of their stories or events from daily life attracted many visitors. Later, users of the Twitter microblogging service were able to add photos and videos.

In 2011, the Russian language was added to the system. In 2013, Twitter listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

Interesting facts about the company

The name of the company was formed from the English verb to tweet, which translated into Russian sounds like “tweet” or “twitter.” The popularity of the system is evidenced by the emergence of the neologisms “tweet” and “retweet”. If the first word means publishing a message in the system, then the second word means the action when the user shares someone else's post.

The main idea when creating Twitter was to develop an application that would allow messaging directly from mobile phones. At the same time, the length of SMS in phones was limited to 140 characters. This is how the famous limitation in the microblogging service appeared. It should be noted that in 2021, Twitter has increased the maximum message size to 280 characters.

One of the famous Twitter users is the current US President Donald Trump. For him, the service became a kind of operational press service, and his activities there were nicknamed “Twitter diplomacy.”

The now popular hashtags were first widely used on Twitter.

How the incident in Minsk affected Nord Stream 2

At this stage, Moscow is satisfied with the current format of bilateral cooperation with Beijing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking about a possible alliance with China in the issue of confrontation with the United States.

“At this stage, both we and our Chinese partners are satisfied with the current format of cooperation. It allows you to solve any, even the most complex problems in a bilateral dialogue, effectively defend interests in multilateral associations, and coordinate approaches in the international arena,” Lavrov said in an interview with Arguments and Facts.

He added that now Russian-Chinese relations are demonstrating high dynamics of development, their condition is characterized as the best in history - largely due to the fact that the existing model of bilateral relations to some extent exceeds the level of interaction between states within the framework of those alliances that have developed in times of the Cold War.

The basic principles of relations between the two states are laid down in the Treaty of Good Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in July.

“Russia and China, working together, have a positive, stabilizing impact on the global and regional situation. Of course, the situation in the world is changing quickly,” Lavrov emphasized.

The minister recalled that earlier his Chinese colleague Wang Yi emphasized that Russian-Chinese interaction has no end point, no restricted areas and no upper limit. “I think one cannot but agree with this assessment,” Lavrov noted.

Speaking about relations with the United States, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow stands for the development of relations with Washington and is ready to clear up the “debris” that exists in these relations.

“In recent years, an unhealthy situation has developed in Russian-American relations. A lot of “irritants” have accumulated. The Americans are pursuing an openly unfriendly line: imposing sanctions, making unsubstantiated accusations against us, and taking other hostile steps. (...) All this creates an extremely toxic atmosphere and prevents the establishment of a calm, professional dialogue between our countries,” Lavrov said.

He emphasized that Moscow has always advocated the development of constructive, mutually beneficial cooperation with Washington and the removal of those “blockages” that prevent us from moving forward. “As historical experience shows, even the deepest disagreements can be overcome, provided that the desire for this is mutual,” the minister noted.

As for relations between Russia and the European Union, neither, according to Lavrov, are “reduced to a minimum.”

“The European Union’s line of containing Russia is strengthening. Blatant interference in the internal affairs of our country continues, as, for example, in the situation around Navalny. Unilateral sanctions against Russian citizens and legal entities are expanding. Unfounded accusations against us are being circulated,” he explained.

“The latest “novel” was the nomination by the European Union of a new triad of principles for relations with Russia. Now, “repulsion” and “containment” of our country are in first place. And the third principle – “interaction” – is limited exclusively to “topics of interest to the EU”. The question arises: does Brussels really seriously hope to break the deadlock in relations by using such a deliberately confrontational scheme? Colleagues must clearly understand that there will be no “one-sided game”. Russia cannot be frightened by sanctions and threats. We will continue to respond to any provocations or unfriendly steps – if necessary, harshly, but proportionately,” Lavrov promised.

At the same time, he added, Russia remains interested in cooperation with the EU and “its member countries in the spirit of pragmatism and mutual respect, while observing generally accepted norms of international law.”

Previously, Lavrov said that Western countries, in an attempt to impose their position on others, are introducing totalitarianism in international relations.

What affects the stock price

Twitter's stock price is strongly influenced by the situation in the Internet technology industry. In addition, exchange rate fluctuations may be affected by prospects and any news related directly to the corporation.

Company prospects

Twitter has firmly occupied the blogging niche. News is published here faster than on other resources. In addition, the service is used by a large number of so-called opinion leaders.

In the coming years, Twitter will focus on introducing new types of content. Increased attention will be paid to the development of instant messaging functionality. In order to combat negative content, machine learning algorithms are being introduced. In addition, Twitter is developing a new version of its mobile application: it will become more convenient for communication.

Twitter is a very convenient platform for advertising. This is due to the fact that the service has a common news feed: this provides a large number of clicks on advertised links. This feature of the web resource will generate income for its founders for a long time.

First of all, users value the service for “tweets”, i.e. the ability to quickly and concisely share messages. Therefore, as strange as it may sound, management does not need to put a lot of effort into expanding the functionality of the service. In the coming years, Twitter will remain a unique platform in its segment.

Analytics and forecast for the security

For a long time, Twitter's business was unprofitable. However, in recent years the situation has changed in a positive direction: for the sixth quarter in a row, the company has finished with a profit.

2018 was Twitter's first profitable year, with revenue up 25% to $3 billion. Net profit for the full financial year reached $1.2 billion, while the company ended 2017 with a loss of $108 million.

This year the positive trend continues. At the end of the first quarter of 2021, Twitter's gross revenue reached $787 million, which is 18% higher than last year. During the same period of time, net profit doubled and reached a record high of $191 million. The number of daily active users increased by 11%.

Analysts believe Twitter shares are undervalued and will rise in the long term. Therefore, they advise not to sell, but to hold securities. And for those who want to invest in securities of foreign companies, it makes sense to opt for Twitter shares.

Alternative in this industry

As of mid-2021, Twitter is ranked 6th in the ranking of the most frequently visited web resources after the Google search engine, Youtube video hosting, Facebook social network, Chinese search engine Baidu.com and Instagram application. The largest share of its users comes from the United States.

If we take the Western market, then the main competitors of Twitter as a platform for communication and advertising are considered to be the social network Facebook and the online messenger Telegram. On the Russian market, the company’s competitors are the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.
